Minimally invasive surgery in the abdomen:
More safety for patients through qualification
Bochum - Minimally invasive interventions in the abdomen for patients above all safe and useful when they are performed by well trained surgeons. However, the training and education is lagging minimally invasive surgery of the rapid development of minimally invasive surgical techniques in many areas afterwards. What additional qualifications are required and how to identify these patients may explain experts of the German Society of Visceral Surgery (DGVC) at a press conference on 13 September in Bochum.
Minimally invasive surgical techniques are particularly useful in the abdomen: the technology allows complex procedures without large abdominal incision, thus reducing the number of wound healing. However, this technique can only be gentler on the patient if the surgery without complications runs. "Studies show that the learning curve in minimally invasive surgery, even for experienced open abdominal surgery is very long," says Professor Dr. med Köckerling, President of the DGVC, Hannover. This professional association has therefore already some years ago the certificate, Minimally invasive surgery 'was introduced, proving the necessary additional qualifications of the surgeons: The qualification looks far from a certain number of courses, internships and minimally invasive surgery. In addition, recordings will be submitted for review. The certificate shall be supplemented in future by a practical test: An experienced expert observed several minimally invasive surgery a surgeon, before it receives the certificate.
