presentations and posters of the UPA Europe 2008
The presentations and posters the UPA Europe 2008 , the first conference of the European branch of the Usability Professionals' Association, are online as PDF files. Note the diversity of perspectives from which the issue of usability was considered. Therefore, it is difficult to name, despite the many good posts a favorite. It is worthwhile in any case to invest a moment of such dark evenings in the reading of the slides.

How true, how true ...
Jeffrey Zeldman , Publisher and Editor-in-Chief has the online magazine A List Apart in his blog published a list of 20 things , from which one wishes that they face a never during the development of a Web project on but which one encounters sooner or later. "Guarantee: All incidents taken from life." I can confirm from my own experience only, but also as an indication that it is after all to exceptions, because "most clients are good clients, and some clients are great clients." Not
Zeldman himself, but Keith LaFerriere has at A List Apart under the heading Flexible Fuel: published Educating the client on IA a very detailed, in the phases' discovery and initial approval "and" design and development "divided up the deliverables of information architects, providing them with explanations of the benefits, thus bringing work to the customer. Given the still rather sparse quality of training for IAs and in light of the detailed knowledge of many "great clients" on the value of good IA perhaps only the target group of the otherwise excellent article is not chosen rightly.

IA Conference 2009: Call for Papers 3rd
This edition, the conference IA in Hamburg on 16 and 17 May of next year should even have held the north of the arrival of spring, so that my hometown would show their best side. In the last year in Stuttgart nearly 200 information architects came together to discuss and follow the mostly high-quality presentations. Just as developing awareness of the issue of information architecture at present, it should be in Hamburg a few more, though on the IA InfoCamp nearly 100 people came to Berlin ( Stefan Freimark it has a very good summary written so that I look at the spare at this point and simply linking to it ). While it was sufficient in all Barcamp Berlin-like, stick a Post-It with his name on a window, requires the submission of a conference in Hamburg, the "contribution proposal" to the starting immediately called . The theme is Business and practice, the focus of the talks this time will be set to "field reports, field studies and the practical application of methods in the IA-life". And as a keynote speaker could tatataataaa be gained IA veteran Lou Rosenfeld .

videos of the Future of Web Apps in London in 2008
It's autumn again, and the gloomy weather you can also get a bad conscience, if you take a little time spent in stuffy conference rooms to follow good lectures, or in front of the computer to get their records to look at. As in the last post already noted, the publications are more valuable, the more information conveyed to the lecture. Slides related to a soundtrack are there quite well, even better, of course, video recordings. Another quality criterion is the time that elapses before the release. In this case, of course, less is more. Seen in Future of Web Apps in London done right: The Conference has gone to just two days over, the first videos were already online yesterday.

slides and handout of EuroIA 2008
posts since yesterday the slides of all presentations of Europe's Fourth Information Architecture Summit (EuroIA) available on SlideShare. It is very gratifying to see that in most cases correspond to the design of the slides of talks in the IA community is now the basic rules of presentation. The associated reduction to the essentials, it is someone who was not present at the presentation, but quite difficult the contents of the presentation to be fully covered. Firstly, of course, another reason to participate in the conferences themselves. For some speakers also an opportunity to summarize their presentations in addition to writing and publishing. In the case EuroIA 2008 did so as Ruud Ruissaard and Peter J. Bogaards for the presentation of information architects are needed Why in the kitchen and Victor Lombardi with his lecture Concept Design Tools for Information Architecture . Moreover, in the conference handout that can be downloaded as a PDF file to find summaries of all presentations.

Participation is still secret, thanks to a sponsor (who, surprisingly, information architecture and marketing, but seem yet every now and again to be compatible only with difficulty) for free.

Cultural aspects of interaction design
Immm often web projects have pan-European or global scale. There are good reasons for it enough. Design, content and applications can be controlled centrally, as well as create and maintain cost. The fact that no two users to the other, and know we usually consider that they are but not only differ in their goals, experience and skills from each other, but especially by its cultural background, has in practice often have too little influence on the development process. The latest edition of the International Journal of Design deals with the cultural aspects of interaction design and offers a collection of recent publications on the subject.

"Separate the excellent information architects from the rest "
Actually, we all know it already, but it is good every now and again, reminded of it, what makes a good information architect. Most recently this has Donna Spencer (formerly Masons) in an interview with Jared Spool commented on this, from which he has published some excerpts under the title Four Essential Skills for Information Architects in his blog . Also worth reading for those who have no information architects, but it may want to be. Only the idea that "mini redesign of a section of a site" are more effective than "big Redesign "I think from my own experience, for no particularly good.

Pay gap in Germany
In which city is most deserving
A chef gets in Dresden 500 euros less than in Frankfurt, Cologne, engineers can earn over € 1000 in Leipzig. The salary differences within Germany are partly serious. Who, where, as has much of his pay slips - here are a few examples.
That deserves more than in the west to the east, is not very surprising. But a pay gap of 1000 € for the same work - that's amazing. The "Bild"-Zeitung, the salaries in the Federal Republic under the microscope. Thereafter, employees earn over Germany in the banking metropolis Frankfurt the most. Here are the huge differences with examples.

"Calling all designers, developers, information architects, project managers, writers, editors, marketers, and everyone else who makes websites." A List Apart calls again to make all the disciplines involved in creating websites, as part of a survey information on their job titles, salaries and work situations. Last year took nearly 33,000 people participated, the collected data were summarized in a report 81seitigen that allows very interesting insights into the commercial landscape around the Web. Apart from the UK was in Europe last year's survey, unfortunately, hardly represented. As the situation in the English-speaking countries can not be directly transferred to the local conditions, it would be great if the European participation this time much more would turn out: Some information given (anonymously) and receive a very valuable analysis of the collected data. A fair deal, I think.

presentations of three case studies
Concrete cases are always looking for the information architecture and difficult to find. By an entry in the extremely well-maintained blog regularly The Hot Strudel Jan Jursa, I came across the videos of the presentations by three examples in the content management arena this year's CeBIT. Patrick Roelofs, former Head of Information Architecture team at Tribal DDB in Hamburg and now co-owner of the agency eparo presents parts of its work for Volkswagen, presents Markus Stolze, consultant and project manager at the BTC his experiences from a project with the utility EWE and Bernhard web from the start, and Rolf Schulte radio.de report Strathaus of eparo of their cooperation. The whole is framed by a presentation of the conferences very active Matthias Müller-Prove, in which he introduces the methods of information architecture briefly, and a final discussion of all the presenters to the question "Is the user-centric design approach for each website useful? "which I actually thought that they no longer under discussion.
The talks are apparently on a rather less skilled audience, the substantive complexity has therefore very limited. Who wants to know, however, as colleagues and how they work so their work present, which was to invest for a moment of his time.

138 presentations of the Changing the Change Conference
From 10 to 12 July was held in Turin, the conference Changing the Change . In 138 lectures, standings and results from different areas of current design research were presented which were assigned to one of the topics Visions, Proposals and Tools . The papers are already fully online, but there are currently (intended or not intended) no adequate overview. A Contents is available as a PDF file available to the individual papers to choose, you have within the URL http://www.allemandi.com/cp/ctc/book.php?id=1 the ID by hand to edit with the ID of the URL, unfortunately, does not match the table of contents.
Since it would take because of the amount for a while until I really all posts should at least read across, I call, as usual, that generally, this time a personal favorite, but refer to the postal Changing the Change - A Call to Action by Mark Vanderbeeken on Core77 in which he is a little guidance to offer.

Last month, this year's winners of the Cannes Lions were celebrated, including in the Cyber Lions category . In addition to very large multi-channel campaigns, such as new to the album Year Zero by Trent Reznor aka Nine Inch Nails, which was handle a Grand Prix thoughtful to me is the least noticed with gold excellent Minimalism site of Mini. There, the user technical features in a very simple form, are explained. Unusual thing is that the user has the length of the presentation may determine. According to the chosen time period between 1 and 60 seconds to explain the different topics in varying detail. It works quite well, as long as one does not select less than 10 seconds, in most cases you can learn the basics.
I personally believe that playing the face of increased bandwidth scalability of information on the Web an increasingly important role. First, in terms of the level and duration, on the other, also with regard to the nature of the media. The Skip button to skip the intro animation on most product websites is there no more than a pretty long standing start, as well as the choice between flash and animation or purely textual presentation of the same website. The site of mini is at least an indication of the direction in which to develop the scalability of information.
